A common sentiment I've heard echoed in the winds of Mount Gilead is, "There's not much to do around here." As someone who wants everyone to thrive in the heart of this small town, I would like to offer a different perspective. Perhaps the charm and vibrancy of a small town are not for everyone, but for those willing to look, there's a treasure trove of activities, places, and people waiting to be discovered.

First and foremost, I love this place. The people, the culture, and the locations that form the tapestry of Mount Gilead are colorful and accessible. We may not have the bustling activity of a metropolis, but we have a richness of community and tradition that many big cities lack.

Take our Downtown Merchants, local businesses, and town hall, for example. They continually pull out all the stops to ensure there's something happening in town. The festivals they host, the vibrant Third Thursday downtown events, and the monthly car shows put on by some of the downtown businesses are testimony to their dedication in making Mount Gilead lively and engaged. Let's not forget the Highland Community Center, always buzzing with events and activities for young and old. It's venues like these that make me wish for a farmers market in our community garden or downtown. Imagine the potential of having a social district in town! With our collective spirit, and local support, we can certainly make that a reality.

When I am looking to dine out locally, Luna's, Burger Shack, and River Wild come immediately to mind. While what one person finds entertaining may differ from another, the diversity of local attractions means there's always something for everyone. I'm particularly fond of the tranquil setting of our nearby lake, the heartwarming conversations with friends, and the thrill of exploring hidden gems in town. Local spots like Speckled Paw Coffee and Cotton and Wood are just a couple of the many jewels in our crown. Not to mention the local wineries near Morrow Mountain that add a touch of sophistication to our town's offerings.

The beauty of Mount Gilead is also in its strategic location. Nestled in the piedmont, we're merely an hour and a half to two hours away from most of the bustling cities North Carolina has to offer, laden with shows and entertainment. Craving a change of scenery? The majestic mountains of Asheville or the serene beaches are just three hours away. My family and I recently returned from a rejuvenating weekend in the mountains, a testament to the accessibility of diverse experiences from our quaint town.

In essence, how busy or entertained one feels in Mount Gilead, or any small town for that matter, boils down to individual preferences, schedules, and budgets. For those willing to engage and immerse themselves in the local culture, opportunities are endless. The key is to stay involved, make connections, and most importantly, to treasure the unique charm that only a small town can offer. So the next time you think there's "not much to do," take a closer look around. Mount Gilead might just surprise you. I'll see you out there.
